Wiccan Wedding
On Sunday March 9th 1997 we held what we think may well have been the first
full scale Celtic wedding in New Zealand. The ceremony began at 14.15 hrs just at
the birth of the New Moon as it moved into Pisces. Ten minutes later there was a
solar eclipse, not viewable from our location but auspicious none the less.
The couple, Miriam and Warryn, were attended by more than fifty of their
close friends and relatives. A real family atmosphere pervaded as the congregation
filled the temple with their love.
The ritual
The ritual lasted almost an hour and included the Raising of
the Temple, welcoming the spirits and elements, the exchange of vows, prayers,
invocations, chants, singing and seeking the blessings of God and the Goddess.
Two trees, a sacred Oak and a fruit tree were planted at the culmination of the
ceremony. The plantings being symbolic of the power and promise of the bride and
groom's future life together.
Celtic Heritage
It was an occasion truly evocative of our ancient Celtic
culture. Most of the guests were robed in the traditional fashion of our forebears.
The wedding feast was like a tribal chieftains banquet. Love and joy was in us all. I
have personally never experienced such a moving wedding or one that held truer
meaning for the participants.
