PURPOSE, GOALS & OBJECTIVES FOR ATTACHED ITINERANT SPECIAL NEEDS RESOURCE TEACHER TEAM


ESTABLISHMENT:

One Senior Teacher and one teacher based at Richmond School (Room 13).


PURPOSE:

This school has Resource Teachers Special Needs to provide educational support for students with significant teaching needs and their teachers within the eight following schools:

Foxhill, Appleby, Wakefield, Ranzau, Brightwater, Richmond, Hope, and Henley


GOAL: To improve the academic and social competency of students identified as having special educational needs.


OBJECTIVES:

(a) Approve a policy statement which details:

1. how students will be identified for inclusion on the roll

2. how programmes will be developed to meet the special teaching needs of each student. Programmes will be co-operatively planned, individualised, "normalising" and effectively monitored

3. how allocated teaching time, ancillary assistance, itineration, resources and supportive services will be used.

(b) Ensure that programmes have been implemented and objectively evaluated.


OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES:

The Board of Trustees will be accountable to the Ministry for the effective, efficient and equitable operation of the unit in accordance with relevant circulars. Management will be the responsibility of a committee consisting of at least the principal, the special education teachers, relevant staff of the Special Education Service, representatives from other learning institutions receiving the service of the resource team, and parents of students.

The Management Committee will:

1. approve enrolment in accordance with the current policy promulgated by the Ministry

2. be involved in the appointment of both permanent and relieving staff

3. ensure the partnership with parents/caregivers and with tangata whenua/iwi is respected the process of policy approval

4. advise the principal on programme approval

5. ensure that contact is maintained with the appropriate adviser and that specialist resources are available to students as required.
